These pieces are handmade in Eastern Ukraine, by a group of artists at Sapfir.  Each  is very unique, hand turned on a lathe and hand painted. No two are exactly the same.  You will see variations in the designs. You will be amazed by the high quality of the workmanship. Each plate has a hanging loop on the back.  High quality, elegant  and completely handmade wood-boxes, candlesticks, decorated eggs, brooches, napkin rings and plates from Kyiv Ukraine.  Sapfir is a Ukrainian artist group created after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, this Ukrainian company along with its artists are part of a revival in this traditional art form .

Each piece starts from native Birch wood, which is found in Western  Ukraine.  The Birch is rough cut to smaller blocks.   The Birch Block is then put on a lathe and turned to a smooth cylinder.  Then each of the Birch cylinders are turned by skilled craftsman into boxes, candlesticks, Pysanky and many other items. No high tech, computerized milling equipment here. Only old world craftsmanship.  The final  most important stage of the work is the painting itself which is done with oil colors by professional artists. Sapfir currently employs about 15 artists. Each one with their own style and flair.  Their imagination  has no limitation, therefore the number of ornamental  designs can  really be unlimited. Each artist takes authorship of their work and each is signed and dated.

Russian Father Frost

Here is one of the many talented Russian artists working in his home. This artist is a graduate of the famous Bogorodskoye carving school located outside Moscow founded by a family who have been famous carvers for over 400 years.  Carved from Linden wood and hand decorated with up to 20 coats of lacquer

The finish and colors of these samples, as shown on our website, show approximate colors.   Because of the variation of coloring in digital photographing, and the varying qualities of computer monitors, you should be aware that there may be some color variance from these screen samples to the actual finish sample.  We have tried to eliminate as many variables as possible to try to produce colors and shades as close to the original as possible.
