ASL American Colonial Pewter

Hand Crafted American Colonial Pewter

Most Items are Made using Antique American Molds

Customers: This Pewter is all hand made by Thomas & Patricia Hooper in Historic Clarksburg, Missouri on the banks of the great Mississippi river.  Most of the pewter is made using American Colonial antique molds which date from 1650 - 1720 to 1830.   The antique molds are made from iron, bronze, brass, aluminum, stone and wood.  Each antique mold has its own character from the hundreds of years of use.  These character marks will appear in the pieces and are not flaws but signs of  real hand made castings with a real history.  Each piece is hand polished.  This is the best quality, hand made 100% lead free, all food safe American Pewter Our American Heritage has found after a three year search - many of these pieces will be found in use at historic colonial sites in New England and the Mid-Atlantic states.   These pewter artists have been selected to reproduce Museum pieces by Philadelphia's William Will (1764 to 1798), Boston's Thomas Danforth Boardman (1804-1860) and Frederick Bassett of New York (1761-1800), sample of which are in the picture on the left.

The Hoopers were honored to have been selected as the pewterers for the HBO miniseries featuring the life of Founding Father John Adams.

The seven part miniseries, based on David McCullough’s biography, aired on HBO. The project was co-produced by HBO,

Tom Hanks’ production company Playtone and Braintree Productions and stared Paul Giamatti as John Adams and Laura Linney as Abigail.

The Hoopers provided more than 500 pieces of pewter that was used in scenes ranging from the Adams’ home in Braintree, MA to the White House dining room, to taverns in Boston and Philadelphia and Philadelphia's Continental Congress. Members of the art department, props department and set decoration department have asked for our guidance for the appropriate pieces for individual scenes. The Hoopers Pewter was listed in the movie credits.

Most pieces comes in a linen bag to protect the finish.

NOTE: The Dark historical finish WILL Show rub and use marks, the finish even when new can be uneven and blotchy - this is a trademark of the finish and not considered flaws.

Wriggle Work Engraving

During the period between 1680 and 1740 most Pewter was not decorated.   The makers relied on the pieces  pleasing proportions and the  use of good metals for its appeal.  An exception to this was the popularity  of wriggle work.  A broad rocker tool was walked back and forth on the piece to create its trademark zigzag lines.  Natural motifs predominate with a number of patriotic designs also found in later pieces.  This work is done exclusively by Patricia Hooper.

Pewter Use & Care

Do NOT use Pewter in the oven or microware or over an open flame.  After each use, hand wash in warm soapy water, rinse well and dry immediately with a soft cloth. Pewter does not tarnish in the same way copper or silver does.  Pewter will oxidize at a very slow even rate which will result in a rich patina.  If you do not care for the rich look of the patina use a metal polish expressly made for pewter polishing to keep a high bright shine.
