CERAMIKA ARTYSTYCZNA "WIZA" was started in 1963 by Stanisław Wiza. The factory was rebuilt on the site of two previous potteries "Tuppak" and "Silesia". Initially it was a very small concern with few employees and few small electric kilns. The pottery flourished due to careful attention to design, both in body shapes and patterns. The manufacturing process was also improved, new kilns and better clays plus more attention to detail. All this achieved results both at home in Poland and abroad. At present Wiza employs about 120 people. They make functional and beautiful table wares, kitchen wares and ornaments

The fine white stoneware is fired at a very high temperature and the only natural paints that retain a good color are used. The decoration is under the clear top glaze and therefore permanent. The range of these paints is very limited. Traditionally cobalt [blue] as in early Chinese porcelains gives a good rich color that can, if skillfully applied be varied in intensity. Many of the blue and white sponge applied patterns that distinguish and make the decorations are traditional. The body of the pottery is extremely tough and durable and each piece is not only beautiful but highly functional.

At present pottery Wiza offer more than 32 traditional patterns as well as Signature or Unikat patterns.  They have been working on developing some lighter more delicate color patterns but stock a rich range of the fuller deeper more traditional sponge ware designs that relate to earlier times. Wiza's aim is to use qualified local designers to develop a new range of patterns while retaining traditional quality and character.  Their pottery is under glaze decorated using natural tree colorants.  The decoration is 100% lead and radium free.  Continuing certified lead free by the Polish government and the US FDA.

The main advantages of the natural colors used in Wiza stoneware is that they can guarantee customers a safe, reliable and durable product. Each piece is beautifully decorated in a very wide range of traditional and modern patterns that will bring a glow to your kitchen and table.

Pottery Care

If you are new to the joys of using beautiful handmade high-fired stoneware, allow us to provide a little helpful information.

One of the first things you'll discover using Boleslawiec stoneware is the way the clays hold and distribute the heat for evenly browned crusts and casseroles that cook uniformly. If you're accustomed to bakeware that has hotspots, you'll be delighted with Polish stoneware.

Wiza stoneware has been certified by the Polish government and the U.S. FDA to be 100% lead free. Also, the glaze quality and the high temperatures at which the pottery is fired result in surfaces with very low porosity, so foods can't stick and clean up is a snap. No need to soak baked-on foods.  All pieces clean up in your dishwasher. To avoid chipping on the edges stack stoneware so they can not bang against each other or other pieces in your dish washer.  We recommend Cascade with a Jet Dry rinse agent.

This Polish stoneware may be used with confidence in your oven, microwave, freezer and dishwasher.

Very hot and very cold temperatures are handled nicely by the stoneware, but sharp temperature swings are not. As with any high quality clay-based stoneware pieces, rapid changes in temperature will deliver "shocks" and will not allow for the natural expansion and contraction required by the clay. Do not, for example, pour cold liquids into hot bowls or take a casserole dish out of the freezer and put it directly into a hot oven. Likewise, use over direct heat, i.e. range burners and open flames, is not recommended. We recommend starting your baking in a cold or warm (300o) oven, then set oven to the recommended temperature for your recipe. Since the stoneware retains even heat it will continue cooking the food after removal from your oven.  "Our American Heritage" recommends using the same cooking times as in your recipes and check for doneness at the times indicated.

Do Not place a hot dish on a tile or stone counter!  Please use a cloth or wood trivet

While all clay products are breakable, these are incredibly tough because of the way they are made. First, the clay that is used is mixed to carefully developed specifications, then the thick durable clear glaze seals the pieces, and finally we kiln fire our stoneware at high temperatures so the clay particles fuse together into strong, highly chip-resistant pieces.  You enjoy a lifetime of use and beauty.

The finish and colors of these samples, as shown on our website, show approximate colors.   Because of the variation of coloring in digital photographing, and the varying qualities of computer monitors, you should be aware that there may be some color variance from these screen samples to the actual finish sample.  We have tried to eliminate as many variables as possible to try to produce colors and shades as close to the original as possible.

Please Note: All Hand Made Items Are Unique, pottery may vary in color, pattern, shape, size or other physical characteristics.  Bubbles, Grazing and glaze variations are traits of hand craftsmanship, no two pieces made  by hand can be exactly the same, these are signs of uniqueness and NOT defects.
