Because all of Rowe Pottery products are handmade, you will not find the consistency of machine made, production-line products. The size and shape of a piece will vary and the individual decorator who creates your piece will influence the pattern. Throwing ridges created by the potter's hand as it turns on the wheel, brown flashings created in the kiln where two pots "kiss" each other all add to the character and uniqueness of your particular piece. These are inherent traits of salt glaze stoneware and make each piece a joy for you and generations to come.

Early Americans cherished their stoneware for its durability in oven and hearth. Crocks, jars and jugs had to withstand daily use and perform equally well in extreme hot and cold temperatures. Today we enjoy authentic salt glaze for the same reasons.  It's 100% food safe and use it in the oven, microwave and is dishwasher safe.

Rowe Pottery is handmade with pride just like it was 150 years ago.

Historical 2017

Our 2017 Historical Jug is Handcrafted using traditional methods and traditional glazing. The shoulder jug is a classic stoneware piece, used to store wine, whiskey or your favorite "spirit". Each jug is hand thrown and the top is glazed with a replica of the classic Albany slip, once mined as a very popular glaze slip, the mine in Albany NY has since shut down and the raw material is no longer available, the bottom is ash glazed for a truly antique finish. Handcrafted in Cambridge WI since 1975

Colorization varies greatly due to the Salt Glaze style of firing the pottery - Colors from pale grey blue to dark brown are normal -

we can not speculate on what color you will receive - each is a limited edition - all will have brown and blue spots

Whiskey Jug

Back in the day, pottery was like "Tupperware" today... it's primary function being storage of precious supplies including sugar, flour and of course whiskey! Whiskey was sold to the general store in wooden barrels, customers would bring their own stoneware jugs or barrels in to fill, refill and enjoy! Rowe Pottery's Historical Whiskey Jug is hand thrown on a traditional potter's wheel by our local artisan. Each piece is hand decorated with our traditional cobalt blue and finished with our natural ash glaze giving it a brown undertone.

Beer Bottle

Stoneware Beer Bottles have a rich Wisconsin History. They were some of the first bottles produced for WI Brewers and merchants as far back as 1840. Traditional bottles were made in a plaster mold with a liquid clay, we are using these same traditional methods. The piece is then hand trimmed and a cobalt blue glaze rims the top and highlights the Rowe Pottery Collectible sprig

Yelloware

Yelloware with Pestle

Yelloware is a heavy earthenware, it adorned many kitchens in the mid 1800's and was most commonly made into bowls of multiple sizes. It became popular due to it's low cost and durability. Our spin is a bowl with a small spout used to muddle fruit, sugar and juice for your favorite cocktails. It comes with a custom wood pestle with the Rowe Pottery logo burned in.
